When Tobias Harris turned down an $80 million extension from the LA Clippers last summer, a lot of people questioned the move. However, the now Philadelphia 76ers forward knew exactly what he was doing.

Harris, who is making $14.8 million this season, will become an unrestricted free agent this summer and is looking to sign a lucrative contract which will pay him much more than $80 million.

The Clippers, sensing Harris was looking for a payday in the summer, traded the versatile swingman to the Sixers at the trade deadline. It was the fifth time in his NBA career Harris had been traded.

Tobias Harris has been overlooked his entire basketball career. It's one of the main reasons why he plays with a chip on his shoulder, and those close to him weren't surprised he turned down an $80 million extension from the Clippers.

“Eighty-million is a lot of money,” Harris told Jonathan Gold of the Washington Post. “People said, ‘How you turn that down?' Look, I know my trajectory. I know when to bet on myself. We looked at the salary cap, looked at free agents, and with all the work I put in, we thought I’d be one of the top guys.

“This is something I’ve worked toward. This is not something you just wake up and get. If you saw my day, what I put into it — it’s been a whole plan. An investment.”

Harris is one of the most underrated players in the league. With the Clippers and Sixers this season, the 26-year-old New York native is averaging 20.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 49.7 percent from the field and 43.0 percent from beyond the arc.

For the first time in his NBA career, Harris is playing for a contender. The Sixers are 37-21 on the season and have a great chance at winning the Eastern Conference with Harris in the mix.
