The Philadelphia 76ers fell short of their title aspirations on Thursday as the top-seeded Miami Heat eliminated them in the Eastern Conference semifinals. It was a disappointing ending to the season, but Joel Embiid was clearly hurt and James Harden failed to live up to expectations. That being said, the Sixers do have a future star in second-year guard Tyrese Maxey, who showed serious promise all season long. His first move right after Philly was knocked out proves just how great of a player and human being he really is.

Via Lauren Rosen:

That's right. Maxey called Sixers head coach Doc Rivers at 1 am. It's unknown what was said, but there is a good chance the former Kentucky standout thanked Doc for his hard work and for helping him succeed. Maxey saw his numbers skyrocket during the regular season, averaging 17.5 points, 4.3 assists, and 3.2 rebounds on 42% shooting from deep.

In the playoffs though, Maxey was even better. He put up 20.8 points, 3.9 dimes, and 3.5 boards while shooting a stellar 94% from the charity stripe. With Harden struggling to step up, Maxey rose to the occasion and served as their second star for the Sixers alongside the beat-up Embiid.

The 21-year-old always has a smile on his face and just absolutely loves to play basketball. Maxey is proving he could be a serious building block for this franchise. Doc clearly loves him.

It will be interesting to see the type of leap Tyrese Maxey takes in Year Three.
