The Philadelphia 76ers have a lot on the line with Jimmy Butler hitting free agency, but should he choose to leave, the team could look to add some wing depth by pursuing Danny Green or Terrence Ross in free agency.

The organization will likely have to choose between Butler and Tobias Harris, as they are both looking at a potential $190 million max payday in free agency, despite new GM Elton Brand's intention to keep both players.

Should the Sixers opt to let Butler walk and sign Harris, they could arm themselves with some solid help at the wing, using the remaining money to bring back marksman JJ Redick (who is coming off back-to-back one-year deals) while pursuing Green and Ross as a contingency plan, according to Jordan Brenner of The Athletic.

The Sixers could enjoy $38 million in cap room if Butler leaves and Harris stays, while the converse would leave them with $30 million in room. While $8 million surely doesn't seem like much to spend for a coveted former All-Star, it could make a difference when it comes to making free-agent offers in the summer.

Brand's promise to keep both Butler and Harris is possible, but one that would make the Sixers' luxury tax bill skyrocket out of orbit in the next few years, making it tough to keep Ben Simmons or much of this core together.

Giving Butler and Harris both a five-year max would put the Sixers in win-now mode, but only give them a short window for success, as it's a wild and rather unrealistic route to contend in the East:

“My gut tells me it’s going to be hard to keep both of them,” said a Western Conference executive. “I thought they were going to let Jimmy go, but he had a great playoff and they’re under a lot of pressure to keep him. I would have said before that they’re keeping Tobias for sure, and I still think they want to, but now if they’re going to offer Jimmy the max, does Tobias stay? It’s a really interesting situation.”

The Sixers must make this decision in the next few weeks, and do so keeping in mind the players they must target to give either Butler or Harris the help they will need to make another deep run in the playoffs.
