The winter transfer window will open in January, and Barcelona may be among the more active clubs in making moves over the month.

Due to financial complications within the club, Barca opted to rely on free transfer agreements to reinforce the team over the recent summer transfer window, which included signing former Olympique Lyonnais forward Memphis Depay to a multiyear contract deal.

Barca has been rumored to be quite active over the upcoming winter transfer window, and as manager Xavi Hernandez noted during a press conference ahead of the La Liga fixture against Osasuna, he confirmed that he recently met with club officials to discuss preliminary plans for next month.

“We always have to improve the team and January is an opportunity,” Xavi said. “We must be alert in the market. There's a lot of communication and [Thursday's] meeting was very productive.

“I was very clear on what I want and feel we need. We have financial problems and salary limits, but we have to work hard to find solutions to improve the team and be more competitive.”

Barca president Joan Laporta noted on Friday that the club will look to sign players in January in order to revamp the team.

The La Liga powerhouse has been in the rumor mill with a multitude of talents — primarily attackers — as of late, from RB Leipzig forward Dani Olmo to Manchester City forward Ferran Torres. This comes as the side is averaging 1.5 goals per match in La Liga play and also finished this season's UEFA Champions League group stage with a mere two goals scored.

The upcoming winter transfer window may be a vital period for Barcelona as it looks to move into a top-four spot in the La Liga standings. The side currently sits at eighth place in the league table.
