Borussia Dortmund was dealt a brutal injury blow on Sunday during their clash against Borussia Monchengladbach when prized young midfielder Giovanni Reyna came up lame with an apparent leg injury. The American could be seen in tears as he limped off the pitch in the 30th minute of the Bundesliga matchup, clearly frustrated after having only just returned from a six-month absence.

Reyna had been sidelined for six months with a hamstring injury, and his appearance in Sunday's fixture was his first time in the starting XI since going down with the injury back in early September. He has made two appearances for Dortmund off the bench since returning from the injury, coming on as a substitute in the 5-2 defeat to Bayern Leverkusen, and also featuring in the 4-2 defeat against Rangers in the Europa League.

Reyna, 19, injured his hamstring during a World Cup qualifying match on Sept. 2 between the United States and El Salvador, and had been sidelined up until the start of February, when he made his return against Leverkusen.

He played a total of 105 minutes in his return from injury before his latest ailment forced him off the pitch on Sunday. He was replaced by Julian Brandt as Dortmund went on to beat Monchengladbach in a stunning 6-0 showing.

Reyna has featured in just five matches for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga this season, having scored two goals. The 19-year-old was expected to feature for the United States in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers in March, though his availability for those games will now be in question following his latest injury.
