Liverpool enters this matchup having won four consecutive games. Despite losing their most recent Champions League tie, Liverpool had done enough in the first leg against Inter Milan to propel themselves into the quarterfinals. Now, they'll travel to Portugal where they'll look to gain an early advantage in the first of the two legs. In Liverpool's most recent outing, they earned a 2-0 victory against Watford, with goals from Diogo Jota and Fabinho securing the win.
The Reds' leading goalscorer through the Champions League thus far has been Mohamed Salah, who's tucked away 8 goals in as many matches. Liverpool, as usual, will be looking to their Egyptian superstar to create attacking opportunities and find the back of the net with a goal, or maybe two. Of course, they'll have to supplant the sturdy Benfica defense consisting of former Premier League standouts Nicolas Otamendi and Jon Vertonghen.
As for Benfica, the Portuguese club enters play on the heels of a 3-2 defeat against Braga. Prior to that loss, however, Benfica hadn't lost a match since Feb. 2. The club had won six games and drawn three during that span, but their streak without a loss came to an end on Friday. Benfica advanced to the quarterfinals after taking down Ajax 3-2 on aggregate scoring. The clubs tied 2-2 in the first leg before Benfica secured its place in the next round with a 1-0 road win.
Darwin Nunez will be a key player for Benfica in this one, having tucked away four goals in seven Champions League matches. If he can find the scoresheet again on Tuesday, it will go a long way towards Benfica staging an upset of Liverpool on their home turf.
Despite the strong form of both teams, the starpower of Liverpool should prove too much for Benfica to handle, and we're expecting Liverpool to take home a victory, even in Portugal. The attacking prowess of Salah, Jota, and Sadio Mane will cause headaches for the Liga NOS side throughout the match and should get the job done.
