San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is one of the more outspoken leaders in all of modern day professional sports. Recently chiming in regarding the league's ongoing controversy with China, Popovich made a point to praise NBA Commissioner Adam Silver for supporting freedom of speech.

Of course, China was one of the league's biggest supporters, as plenty of Chinese fans love the NBA as much as any other territory throughout the globe.

“I’m sympathetic to our interests here and our partners that are upset,” Silver said, via Marc Stein of The New York Times. “I don’t think it’s inconsistent on one hand to be sympathetic to them and at the same time stand by our principles.”

Leading to the controversy, Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey recently tweeted his support of Hong Kong protestors, which is a very a sensitive topic in China these days as one could imagine.

“I recognize our initial statement left people angered, confined or unclear on who we are or what the NBA stands for,” Silver initially said in a formal statement, via NBA.com. “Let me be more clear… The NBA will not put itself in a position of regulating what players, employees and team owners say or will not say on these issues. We simply could not operate that way.”

Despite the chaos that may ensue over the course of the next few days, it still remains to be seen as to how exactly all of this comes to a close.
