Gregg Popovich made history on Friday night as he surpassed Don Nelson as the winningest head coach in the history of the NBA. Pop led the San Antonio Spurs to a tightly-contested 104-102 win over the Utah Jazz, which marked his 1,336th career win.

Hall of Fame coach Don Nelson had a special message for Pop on the eve of his iconic milestone. Nelson expressed how proud he is of Popovich and all that he has achieved throughout his illustrious career:

“Hey Pop, it's your old buddy Nellie here,” said the 81-year-old, via the San Antonio Spurs on Twitter. “I just want to tell you how proud I am of all your accomplishments and the wonderful things you've done for basketball worldwide. But I'm most proud of what you're about to accomplish now, which is put me in second place for all-time wins. I'm so proud of you for doing it. I couldn't wait for this day to happen and I just want you to know that as one of my best friends in life, I just wish you the best for your remaining years in the NBA.”

It has been a long time coming and coach Pop's historic win finally came on Friday night. The Spurs fought hard to give their coach one of the most iconic victories in his career, taking down a formidable Utah Jazz side. It was indeed a night to remember.

Coach Popovich and his men will need to set the celebrations aside, though, as they look to build on Friday's win. The Spurs are currently 11th in the Western Conference and are fighting for a play-in spot. San Antonio is now just one game behind the 10th-seeded New Orleans Pelicans, who have lost four straight, for the final play-in spot in the conference.

Pop will want to make it 1,337 career wins on Saturday as they host the Indiana Pacers in the second night of a grueling back-to-back set. The Spurs are 2-3 in their last five games and they will need to improve on that record if they hope to fight for a place in the playoffs in April.
