When the NBA All-Star reserves were announced last week, it looked like the incredible rise of San Antonio Spurs guard Dejounte Murray was going to fall just short of getting him to the nod. As one of just four players in the NBA this season to average at least 19 points and nine assists per game, Murray was looking like one of the biggest snubs of the 2021-22 NBA season. Considering the other three players on that list are Trey Young, Luka Doncic, and James Harden, it was easy to make that conclusion. Although the feeling of not making the All-Star game this season surely stung a bit when it was first announced, a little bit of the pain can now be wiped away as it was announced earlier on Monday that Murray would be making the team as an injury replacement for Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green. Murray took to Twitter on Monday evening to share his feelings on being selected:
“I Remember Sitting In The Green Room And Being Judged Cause Of My Past As A Kid And The Spurs Knew I Didn’t Have Guidance And Needed A Opportunity. I Remember Tearing My ACL And People Thought It Was Over For Me. Wow, I’m Thankful And Grateful! It’s A Reality Now. Thank You God.” -Dejounte Murray

The injury that Murray is referring to is one that wiped out his entire 2018-19 season after he tore the ACL in his right knee during a preseason game. Despite the injury, Murray has seen his points, rebounds, and assists all increase in each of the five seasons of his NBA career. Murray will be the lone Spurs All-Star this season.
