The San Antonio Spurs are selling a minority stake in the franchise.

However, there is “no chance” the Spurs are going to move from San Antonio, per Sam Amico of Sports Illustrated:

A minority share of the San Antonio Spurs may be up for sale, but “no chance” is the team is considering relocation, a league source told Sports Illustrated.

This became a topic for Spurs fans over the weekend, with many reacting to Shaquille O'Neal's statement about some teams being placed on the market.

While the source contacted by SI wouldn't get into specifics, he did reiterate that the Spurs are “a healthy franchise in a supportive city” and that they “are not going anywhere, that much I know.”

The Spurs franchise was founded in 1967. They were first called the Dallas Chapparals and played in the ABA for nine years.

Before the 2019-20 season began, the Spurs had made the playoffs 22 straight years. However, the team was on its way to missing the postseason before the 2019-20 season was suspended due to COVID-19.

The Spurs went 27-36 before Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19 and the NBA was forced to suspend play. San Antonio could embark on a rebuild this offseason and trade LaMarcus Aldridge and let DeMar DeRozan walk in free agency, although neither move is set in stone.

Head coach Greg Popovich signed a three-year extension with the Spurs in April. However, The Athletic reported in December that Pop is widely known to be taking a year-by-year approach at this stage of his career. He is 71 and has been working with the franchise since 1988.
