It has been a while since Bethesda released a new game on consoles that isn't Skyrim. Hence, it's a big deal that we're finally getting a release date for Bethesda's new IP: Starfield. But let's not get ahead of ourselves: the game won't be coming any time soon. Still, it's great to see its trailer appear at the Microsoft Xbox / Bethesda broadcast during E3 2021.

Starfield Release Date: Sometime in 2022

Starfield will launch sometime on November 11, 2022, on PC and Xbox Series X/S. You've read that right: 2022.

Starfield is Bethesda's upcoming first-person single-player role-playing game. That's a mouthful, but wait until you see the trailer. It looks like Bethesda has big aspirations for Starfield, drawing inspiration from a lot of NASA's previous works in designing the game. In fact, Bethesda describes the game as a “NASA-punk.” Talk about being so aspirational that you're setting out to create an entirely new genre. “For me, Starfield is the Han Solo simulator,” Studio Director Ashley Cheng told The Washington Post. “Get in a ship, explore the galaxy, do fun stuff.”

That actually sounds like a more realistic and a more grounded version of Hello Games' No Man's Sky. We hope that it won't flop at launch like No Man's Sky, because that game was also aspirational, in spite of missing the mark. Thankfully, that game has since recovered – but we're getting off-tangent here. A lot of Bethesda's recent games also flopped a bit or missed the mark a bit from what they aspired to. We hope that won't be the case for Starfield, because right now, the game single-handedly makes the Xbox Series X/S a must-buy, and single-handedly making Microsoft's acquisition of Zenimax/Bethesda worth all the money they paid for it.
