Per NBC Sports, the Pittsburgh Steelers are working on extending their franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. After a lot of turmoil last season within the organization, team officials have made it clear that he will be staying there moving forward.

Roethlisberger has one year left on his current contract, and a cap hit of $23.2 million in 2019. If the Steelers are going to work out a new deal with Roethlisberger, it would make sense to do it before his $5 million roster bonus comes due in March.

Art Rooney II told Trib Live:

“We’ve already started talking to him and his representative about extending that contract. I think Ben has some good years left. I’d still say he’s close to being in the prime of his career. Now that we’re seeing quarterbacks around the league that are playing into their 40s,” Rooney said, “I’m not sure there’s any reason that Ben can’t play for several more years. We’re looking forward to that.”

Last season for the Steelers, Roethlisberger had a pretty decent season from under center. He threw for 5,129 yards with 34 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. His completion percentage sat at a respectable 67.0 percent and his quarterback rating was a 73.0, top five in the entire league.

Roethlisberger, who turns 37 in March, led the NFL in passing in 2018, but he also topped the league in interceptions. He has the chance to lead off a new era in the organization. Head coach Mike Tomlin also appears to be staying on. However, Antonio Brown is probably heading on his way out.
