Coming into the 2019 season, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be adjusting to life without Antonio Brown in the offense. For the time being, Donte Moncrief seems to be the front-runner for the second-receiver spot, per Dan Graziano of ESPN.
The Steelers eventually traded Brown after their All-Pro wideout became disgruntled with the organization. Brown was shipped to the Oakland Raiders in a blockbuster trade. Immediately, Pittsburgh realized they would need to find ways to replace his immense production in the offense.
As a result, the Steelers signed Moncrief in free agency and are expecting JuJu Smith-Schuster to step into Brown's role as the go-to guy in the offense. Moncrief is trying to prove himself as a reliable option on the opposite side of Smith-Schuster this year.
Before arriving in Pittsburgh, Moncrief spent four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts before suiting up for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2018. With the Colts, Moncrief flashed his potential as a red-zone threat alongside T.Y. Hilton.
However, Moncrief would eventually fall out of the Colts' plans on offense after failing to show consistency as a receiver. Moncrief's best season came in 2015 when he caught 64 passes for 733 yards and six touchdowns.
Since then, the veteran wideout has struggled to become a consistent piece in an NFL offense. Last season, Moncrief ended with 48 receptions, 668 yards, and three touchdowns.
Now, after spending five seasons in the AFC South, Moncrief will need to get adjusted to the competition in the AFC North. The Steelers' new offensive weapon will also need to adjust to catching passes from Ben Roethlisberger.
Not just one guy is going to replace Brown's production but a few guys can help fill the void—beginning with Moncrief.
