The Pittsburgh Steelers have reportedly made some progress on contract talks with Le’Veon Bell with the Monday deadline to get a long-term deal done creeping ever closer.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is optimistic that progress will lead to the team making a big announcement involving his star running back by the time that deadline passes.
“Obviously we want to get the deal done,” Tomlin said per WAVY in Virginia. “He wants to get the deal done. Everybody has said that. Now it’s just about the negotiators getting in the room, and doing what it is they need to do. I’m excited and hopeful. Hopefully we’ll have some exciting news Monday.”
This isn’t the first time Tomlin has expressed his optimism that Bell will eventually sort out his future with the Steelers. But of course, it’s almost Tomlin’s job to talk up those chances that the team will eventually get a deal done with Bell.
Despite the head coach’s hope, there is a very real possibility the Steelers can’t sort out a long-term deal, which will likely push Bell into unrestricted free agency in 2019 and put his future in Pittsburgh in serious doubt.
The Steelers will have to brace themselves for that unpleasant scenario if the Monday deadline passes without Bell signing a deal. But until then, Tomlin and the rest of Steeler Nation still have a few more hours to hold out hope that they will indeed hear the news they want to hear with regard to their star on Monday.
