Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier was voted into the Pro Bowl for the second time in his career this season. Unfortunately, he couldn’t feature in this year’s game as he continues to recover from a serious spinal injury.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was in attendance in Orlando, though, and he used some custom-made cleats to send a special shoutout to his injured teammate:

“There's one guy that's supposed to be here that's not here but hopefully is watching, and that's Ryan. Ryan, we love you, we've got you on our cleats, we've got you on our shirts. We're loving you, buddy,” Roethlisberger said prior to the game per ESPN.

Shazier tweeted his appreciation for Big Ben’s touching tribute:

Shazier suffered his spinal injury on Dec. 4 against the Cincinnati Bengals and underwent spinal stabilization surgery on Dec. 7. He remains in a wheelchair but has regained feeling in his legs after concerns of possible paralysis.

Had Shazier played in the Pro Bowl, he would’ve joined a Steelers-dominated contingent on the AFC team. Nine Steelers players took part including stars Roethlisberger, Le’Veon Bell, and Antonio Brown. Mike Tomlin and the Steelers’ coaching staff was also in charge of the AFC.

It was certainly a great gesture by Roethlisberger to use the Pro Bowl as an opportunity to keep Shazier’s spirits up as he battles through what must be an extremely difficult time in his life. While it seems unlikely at the moment, Shazier can hopefully make a full recovery from his injury and make it back to the Pro Bowl one more time.
