The Pittsburgh Steelers somehow contended for a playoff spot this past season, and their stingy defense was a big reason why.

But safety Terrell Edmunds doesn't think the unit did anything particularly special in 2019 and is looking forward to an even stronger performance from the defense next year.

“We never did anything great, spectacular,” Edmunds said, according to Mark Kaboly of The Athletic. “We did a whole lot of good things, we made some good plays, but we didn’t make too many great plays even though we had the stats. I guess this is something that we can work on this offseason and something we have to build off of and be able to take that next step. We are doing a lot of good things, but not a lot of things great and that’s what we want to do.”

Of course, the fact that Pittsburgh went 8-8 and missed the postseason had a lot more to do with its offense.

Thanks to Ben Roethlisberger going down with a season-ending elbow injury in Week 2, the Steelers shuffled between Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges at quarterback the rest of the way, and two of their most important offensive pieces in running back James Conner and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster missed considerable time due to injuries.

With Roethlisberger set to return in 2020, it stands to reason that there won't be as much pressure on Pittsburgh's defense to keep games close.

Edmunds just completed his second NFL season, racking up 105 tackles and three passes defended.
