It has only been a mere two days that Kenny Pickett has been in action in a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform, and rookie wideout Calvin Austin III is already impressed with what he has seen so far from the former Pitt quarterback.
The Steelers opened up their rookie minicamp schedule on Friday, which featured a mere walkthrough session. Day 2 included more on-field work featuring the likes of both Pickett and Austin. The former Memphis standout caught passes from Pickett over the course of the day.
Speaking after his on-field workout on Saturday, Austin touched on his early impressions of Pickett, where he noted that the Steelers’ first-round pick sure can sling the football.
“That boy can throw it,” Austin said. “I already knew he can throw it from the Senior Bowl. Catching balls from him just feels comfortable. It feels great.”
Steelers rookies Pickett and Austin were not teammates at this year’s Senior Bowl, although the latter did have quite a front-row seat to watch the 2021 ACC Player of the Year shine on the day. Pickett recorded 89 passing yards and one passing touchdown during his time on the field at the 2022 Senior Bowl.
The Steelers will cap off their rookie minicamp schedule on Sunday. Pickett and the rest of the Steelers’ draft class will then return to on-field action on May 24 for the start of the team’s OTA offseason workouts.
