Before Game 2 of the NBA Finals started on Sunday, it was announced that Steve Kerr will return to the Golden State Warriors‘ bench and coach the team for the first time since the opening round of the playoffs. It caught many by surprise, especially his players and coaching staff, who did not expect him to be back yet.
One of them was Stephen Curry, who was asked during the post game press conference when he found out the fourth-year head coach would be with them during the game. He admitted he only found out the same time as everyone else, and added that his presence was huge for them. The reigning back-to-back MVP also said that Kerr gave them a lot of energy, which may be the reason why they played even better on the night, compared to the first game of the series.
Despite LeBron James having a brilliant game, Curry was able to match his production and recorded a triple-double of his own. Kevin Durant also had a monster game with 33 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. With how they've played, it leaves the Cavs with more questions to answer, as The King's all-around effort was still not enough for them to steal one game on the road.
Kerr's return may be more than just calling the plays for the Dubs. He gives them more motivation to play harder and also inspires the players to give it their all and win another championship. He personifies courage to overcome challenges, which he wants his team to also do. The good news for Kerr is they have responded well and are now only two games away from their second title in three years.
