The Seattle Storm defeated the Washington Mystics on Sunday to get their first win of the WNBA regular season. Seattle avoided an 0-3 start and took a crucial step forward after two losses to the Minnesota Lynx in a home-and-home series. What made the difference for the Storm? On one hand, one could take the skeptical view and say that the injury to Washington's Brittney Sykes was decisive. On the other hand, the Storm received a new injection of production against Washington which made a real difference. Ezi Magbegor scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in what was easily her best game of the young season. With Nneka Ogwumike out due to injury, Magbegor's performance was essential in holding things together for Seattle. The Storm got a combined total of 42 points from Skylar Diggins-Smith and Jewell Loyd in the win over the Mystics. The two players were just 17 of 37 combined from the field, but they made up for less-than-elite field goal shooting by getting to the free throw line, making 15 foul shots out of 18. Seattle made 23 free throws for the game, seven more than Washington. That plus-seven point differential mattered in a game Seattle won by nine, 84-75. We will see if that win over the Mystics gives the Storm the jump-start they so desperately need in the early stages of the WNBA season.

Why The Storm Could Cover The Spread

The Storm looked better against Washington. Ezi Magbegor's big performance is something this team really needed. It can't just be Jewell Loyd and Skylar Diggins-Smith if Nneka Ogwumike is still out of the lineup. Seattle needs more balanced contributions, and it received them against the Mystics. Maybe that will turn things around for this team, which has struggled to play its best basketball.

Seattle should also take confidence from the fact that it generated 29 free throw attempts against Washington. That shows that the Storm can get to the foul line when their jump shots aren't falling. That is the mark of a good and resourceful offense. Seattle has different ways to score and players who have different options in terms of creating good looks at the basket.

The New York Liberty, meanwhile, have not covered the spread in most of their early-season games. They didn't cover in a five-point win over Washington, and they didn't cover when beating the Indiana Fever by 11 this past Saturday. That's two out of three games in which they didn't cover (they crushed the Fever last Thursday, the one time they covered the spread). The Liberty seem to be doing enough to win but nothing more.

Why The Liberty Could Cover The Spread

The Storm are playing the second half of a back-to-back stack of games. They are on the road. Nneka Ogwumike didn't play on Sunday due to injury. If she does play in this game, she probably will be much less than 100 percent. The Liberty got Sunday off and should be fresh, having played at home on Saturday. Everything sets up well for New York in this game.
