The Phoenix Suns have had one of the wildest reversals of fortune in recent NBA history. They went from perennial cellar dweller to a trip to the NBA Finals and back-to-back seasons gunning for the best record in the league.

That's why it's no surprise that the Suns have reportedly signed general manager James Jones to a multiyear extension, according to The Undefeated's Marc J. Spears.

In his reaction to the new deal, Jones expressed nothing but gratitude for the situation he's helped build in Phoenix.

Via The Undefeated:

“I’m just fortunate and I’m extremely grateful to be a part of it,” Jones said of the contract extension to The Undefeated. “It’s more than I could have ever dreamed of to be a part of a team like this, some of the best professionals across sports. And to have the success that we’re having, it’s so much fun. When you step into this job, you never really know what it’ll be like, you hear stories about what it looks like, what the profession looks like, and the arc of a career in the front office or in an organization.”

Jones has been the Suns' decision-maker since 2019, with his first major decision being the hiring of head coach Monty Williams. The team finished the reason with a 34-39 record, their best percentage-wise in the last four seasons at that point.

But that was only a sign of things to come as the Suns ended with the second-best record in the NBA last season at 51-21 and currently have a firm edge for the top spot this season.

More than a decade before joining the Suns as an executive, Jones played two seasons with the Suns from 2005 to 2007. He had arguably the best season of his career in his first year with Phoenix, when he averaged career highs across the board.

Now years later, he's making a much greater impact for the Suns franchise pulling the strings off the court.
