Tyler Johnson is in the news. The Phoenix Suns opted to stay quite at the trade deadline. Regardless, it appears they will try to keep their options open for the rest of the 2019-20 NBA season.
According to ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski, they will waive guard Tyler Johnson in order to open up a roster spot:
Johnson's stint with Phoenix was rather short. He had been acquired along with guard Wayne Ellington in exchange for power forward Ryan Anderson from the Miami Heat at last year's trade deadline. Unfortunately, he has largely struggled to find his footing while dealing with injuries.
This season has not been much different for Johnson after averaging a mere 5.7 points and 1.6 assists in 31 games thus far. Prior to his release, had had already missed four consecutive games wile recovering from a knee injury. Regardless, there should still be a number of teams interesting in landing his services for the second half of the year.
It remains to be seen just what the Suns plan on doing with the extra roster spot now that Tyler Johnson is gone. They have been riddled with injuries this year while the 25-game suspension for DeAndre Ayton has not done any favors for their frontcourt. Although they continue to speak highly of the young talent they have garnered in recent years, it is clear that they are in desperate need of some more quality depth off the bench.
Meanwhile, Johnson's contract is set to expire after this season. It will be interesting to see if there are any potential playoff contenders willing to make some room.
