Phoenix Suns point guard Ricky Rubio is now the all-time leader for assists in FIBA World Cup play, passing Pablo Prigioni's mark of 106 assists in 24 games.

Rubio and Spain squared off against Poland for a quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, resulting in a 90-78 victory for the Spaniards. Rubio, who was playing in his 22nd World Cup game, logged just over 29 minutes, notching 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field (3-of-4 from beyond the arc), nine assists, five rebounds and one steal.

Rubio tied Prigioni's mark against Serbia, then went on to break it in the second quarter of Tuesday's game:

“It’s an honor, really, to be mentioned in the same sentence as one of my idols. I played against him multiple times and I learned a lot from him. Being named in the same category as him, it’s a huge honor,” Rubio told Eurohoops.net.

With Tuesday's win over Poland, Rubio and his Spanish teammates are now through to the semifinal round at this year's tournament:

“We can go far in the World Cup” Rubio told Eurohoops.net after Tuesday's win over Poland. “First we have to believe in it and second, we have to improve the defense and we should have fun playing.

“In life, sometimes, there are hard times and joyful moments,” The Suns star added. “There is a quote someone that I learned a lot from told me: ‘never too high, never too low.' It is a philosophy of life that goes very well.”

“We want to go far,” Rubio said in closing. “We will see the quarter-finals tomorrow, which we can observe in a different way knowing that we made the semifinals.”

Ricky Rubio and Spain will be back in action on Friday when they'll face either Australia or the Czech Republic.
