The FIBA World Cup is not over for Team USA, but they are no longer in contention for the gold medal after losing 113-111 in the semifinals to Germany on Friday morning.

In a game that many anticipated the United States winning, the Germans held their own and led almost the entire time. Brandon Ingram did not play in this game for the Americans due to an illness.

The 113 points surrendered by Team USA proved to be their downfall, as this was a historic feat for all the wrong reasons. Defensively, this was a terrible performance for USA Basketball and the 113 points they gave up to Germany marked the most points this program has ever allowed to a team in either the Olympics or the FIBA World Cup, this according to HoopsHype. In fact, the previous record was 110 points, which the United States gave up to Lithuania earlier in this tournament.

This tournament has seen Team USA's defense allow two different countries to score at least 110 points against them for the first time in over 300 major FIBA events.

NBA talents Franz Wagner and Dennis Schroder led the way for their country against the Americans, scoring 22 and 17 points, respectively. Schroder came up clutch for Germany late in the game, as he hit a pull-up jump shot from the free-throw line over former Los Angeles Lakers teammate Austin Reaves to put his team up six points with less than 40 seconds in the game.

Prior to facing the United States, Schroder had stated that he was looking forward to the opportunity to play against Reaves and that he had “nothing but love” for his former teammate.

For Team USA, Anthony Edwards led the team in scoring yet again with 23 points. Reaves ended up with 21 points off the bench and Brooklyn Nets swingman Mikal Bridges recorded 17 total points.

The U.S. had faced Germany in a friendly ahead of the World Cup last month and they ultimately came back after trailing by as many as 16 points. On Friday, the Americans once again looked to spark a comeback, but they were unable to finish the job.

Entering this tournament as the favorites, Team USA's summer will now end with disappointment, regardless if they win the bronze medal match or not. The Americans will face off against Canada in this game on Sunday afternoon.
