The opening game for Texas football is Saturday as the Longhorns take on Rice. We know that the starting quarterback will be Quinn Ewers. Now the question becomes will wildly-hyped freshman Arch Manning be the backup quarterback on the Longhorns' depth chart, or will that role go to the equally talented redshirt freshman Maalik Murphy? Head coach Steve Sarkisian revealed his plan for announcing that role.

While the media clamors to know who the Texas Longhorns’ backup quarterback will be in Week 1 vs. Rice, Sarkisian has a three-word answer for all of them: “We’ll find out.”

That terse answer means that the question as to whether Maalik Murphy or Arch Manning — the grandson of Archie, son of Cooper, and nephew of Eli and Peyton Manning — will be Quinn Ewers’ backup won’t come out until Texas football puts out the final depth chart on Saturday.

Everything from time on campus to performance in the public Orange-White spring game points to Murphy being the QB behind Ewers this season. That said, Manning is the most famous athlete to enter college football in years, probably since Eli started at Ole Miss. Steve Sarkisian could feel some pressure to put the legacy over the more experienced player at the backup QB on the Longhorns' depth chart.

Either way, what we know for sure is that Ewers will be on a short leash. If he doesn’t play well and lead Texas football to the promised land this season, the burnt orange faithful down in Austin will be clamoring for the next Manning to get on the field.
