LSU swept the college football awards this season. They were the best team in the nation led by the best quarterback in Joe Burrow. But let's not forget that they also had one of the best defensive players overall in safety Grant Delpit.

Delpit was awarded the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's best defensive back. Come draft time, Delpit will become a first-round pick but his stock has been falling. This is good for the Dallas Cowboys.

Delpit's stock has been falling mainly because of his inconsistency as a tackler. He ranked highly among defensive players with the most missed tackles. During LSU's midseason showdown with Alabama, Delpit missed four tackles in the game.

When looking at overall player rankings, Delpit is still ranked in the top 10 in most, but he's also fallen out of the top 10 in most mock drafts. The Cowboys now have a chance to land a player who they thought would never get to them.

Dallas is in the driver's seat to win the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles dealing with a ton of injuries. This means they will be picking in the bottom half of the draft and Delpit could be an incredible value pick.

Delpit to Dallas?

The Cowboys need help in the secondary. They have one of the best linebacking duos in the league with Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch. Demarcus Lawrence is a monster coming off the edge. The Cowboys need to build a dominant secondary if they truly want to have an intimidating defense.

Despite the missed tackles, Delpit is an intriguing prospect. He does just about everything else well on the football field. Instincts from the safety position cannot be taught and Delpit has incredible instincts and feel.

He knows the right place to be at all times. In pass coverage, he is assignment driven and has the ability to rush the passer as well. At 6'3, 201 pounds, Delpit has the physical makeup to come in and make an impact from the start.

Delpit has drawn comparisons to Derwin James. He has the ability to come in and play at an All-Pro level as a rookie, similar to James in Los Angeles.

Dallas is more than likely going to lose Byron Jones at one of the cornerback positions. They will need to upgrade from Xavier Woods and Jeff Heath at safety. The Cowboys have a chance to grab a top 10 talent near the bottom of the draft. This is too good of a chance to pass up if Delpit is on the board.
