The Houston Astros signed starting pitcher Justin Verlander to a two-year, $50 million deal before the MLB lockout. However, MLB Network reporter Jon Heyman points out the great ‘mystery' involved with the Verlander-Astros agreement amid the lockout.

That is… interesting. Justin Verlander signed with the Astros but the deal still hasn't been made official. Now, the two parties have to wait until the MLB agrees upon a new CBA for the deal to officially occur.

What's particularly interesting is the fact that Verlander isn't even listed on the Astros roster on MLB.com, as noted by Heyman. That means that Verlander, one of the prized starting pitchers available this offseason, is still technically a free agent.

That will make fans of teams like the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays, MLB teams that were interested in the services of Verlander, very happy.

Heyman also notes that no one has responded to his queries about the Verlander-Astros deal. This is a very fishy situation. It almost seems like Verlander is keeping his options open, or the Astros really weren't as close to resigning him as they thought and prematurely released news about it.

Either way, the great Justin Verlander- Astros mystery is sure to be in the news if and when the MLB agrees upon a new CBA.
