The Detroit Tigers, like all of MLB, are looking towards the offseason after the conclusion of the World Series. They began the “Hot Stove” season with an addition in the dugout.

The Tigers have hired Iowa baseball pitching coach Robin Lund, according to the Detroit Free Press. Lund will be an assistant pitching coach, giving Detroit three pitching coaches on its staff.

In addition, Lund will have a role within the organization's sports science and biomechanics department. The new Tigers coach has an extensive background in science, earning a master's and a doctorate in exercise science.

After securing his doctorate, the 50-year-old became an associate professor in Northern Iowa's department of kinesiology. He held the position for 16 years before transitioning into coaching baseball. “I’m a scientist that coaches pitchers,” Lund said back in May. “I don’t know if it’s innovation.”

The Tigers shook up their coaching staff following an incredibly disappointing season. Many believed the team could contend for the postseason in the wake of a promising 2021, but the Tigers barely managed to avoid 100 losses in 2022.

The Tigers moved on from hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh and quality control coach Josh Paul. Assistant hitting coach Mike Hessman and third-base coach Ramon Santiago were offered minor league reassignments.

“It was obviously time for us to assess the staff, and we’re gonna have a different staff and a different message and a different collection of guys to hopefully push the players in a new direction,” Tigers manager AJ Hinch said of the moves in early October.

Lund joins pitching coach Chris Fetter and fellow assistant pitching coach Juan Nieves on the pitching side of the staff. There is no word as to whether Nieves will remain with the team following this move.
