Tom Thibodeau is at it again. The Minnesota Timberwolves are signing Luol Deng as the cavalcade of former Bulls to join Thibodeau's squad continues to grow. But for this former Bull, there are no assurances of a particular role in Minnesota, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Wojnarowski writes:

“Thibodeau has made no promises to Deng on playing time and role, but has offered the chance to earn minutes on a roster that includes three of his ex-Chicago Bulls teammates — Jimmy Butler, Derrick Rose and Taj Gibson.”

Even without assurances of playing time, this move makes sense for both sides. For Deng, almost anywhere is better than his situation in Los Angeles. At least in Minnesota, he'll have the opportunity to force his way into the rotation.

Jimmy Butler and Andrew Wiggins are the workhorses on the wings, but the depth chart is filled with unproven talent after those two. C.J. Williams, Keita Bates-Diop and Josh Okogie are all unproven players. Having Deng on the roster gives Minnesota some insurance if the young guys aren't quite ready to contribute.

From Thibodeau's perspective, he brings in a veteran he knows he can work with. Deng provides some depth on the wing and might surprise people this year, although he's no longer the same player he was in Chicago.

Of course, the jokes about Thibodeau's TimberBulls are rampant. That's to be expected. But now that all the dust is settling, this move looks like a low-risk, high-reward move for Minnesota. Even Deng isn't playing well, they have no obligation to keep him in the rotation.
