The Tennessee Titans made a risky announcement when news broke that they were not planning on applying the franchise tag to talented edge rusher Harold Landry, who was coming off of the most productive season of his career. By not doing so, the Titans were running the risk of losing Landry to free agency. However, Tennessee avoided that possibility with a move on Tuesday night, signing Landry to a new contract, as reported by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Per Pelissero, Harold Landry has agreed to a five-year, $87.5 million contract with the Titans. The deal includes $52.5 million guaranteed.

Landry, 25, totaled a career-high 12 sacks for Tennessee while tallying 14 tackles for loss. The Boston College product was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career.

Landry would have made $18.7 million playing the 2022 season under the franchise tag. The talented linebacker was part of a Titans defense that quietly ranked sixth in the league in points allowed per game.

The 25-year-old reportedly wanted to be the “highest-paid player in his meeting room”, a title that he will now command, as he has only just edged teammate Bud Dupree. It's unclear if the cash-strapped Titans made the wisest move by devoting that much cash to a linebacker, though they also weren't exactly in a position to let Landry walk.
