One of the hardest things to do in the NFL is getting back in if you happen to leave the game. For some guys, it is easier than others. It depends on why you left. Former Los Angeles Rams running back Tre Mason is finding out just how hard it can be.
According to Matt Zenitz of AL.com, Mason’s reps have been reaching out to teams to say he’s available and interested in playing again after two years away.
Mason was drafted by the Rams in 2014 in the third round. He played sparingly over the next two seasons and gained 972 yards on 254 carries. There was hope for him, and at his age (24-years old), he could still develop into a reliable contributor for someone. But chances are good that no one will trust him because of what led to his absence.
A host of issues with the police and at home put his mental stability under question. His mother told the authorities during one of their visits to the house that he had the mind of a 10-year old. She went on to say that they could see a change in him following the 2015 season (via Pro Football Talk):
“Clearly, we could see the change. Like, completely….
“As much as he’s accomplished, as hard as he’s worked, as much as he’s built his character, in record-breaking time it’s going downhill because of what’s going on. He doesn’t even know. He’s not conscious enough.”
Teams have been understanding about legal issues in the past. But mental health issues and potentially safety? It would be surprising to see anyone take a chance on Mason. They would be afraid of what he may do at the facility, on a road trip, or during a game.
He can say he’s better now. But after acting as unstable as he did, it's hard to see anyone rolling the dice on him again. Why should they when there is a fresh group of talented young running backs coming out of college.
