LiAngelo Ball, teammates depart China after Donald Trump called for Xi’s help
President Donald Trump may be many things to a lot of people, but in this one case, he definitely deserves some credit for a win — at least for the UCLA Bruins and the Ball family.
LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley, and Jalen Hill were taken into custody and detained during UCLA’s visit to China due to accusations of shoplifting from a Louis Vuitton store in Hangzhou.
The three were held in a luxury hotel after the team departed to the United States on Saturday with no answer as to what would happen with their teammates who were facing possible long-term prison sentences.
Fortunately for the three athletes, President Trump sought the help of Chinese President Xi Jinping during his Asian Summit visit to aid the process of releasing the players.
According to one White House official, the players received light treatment and release due to US Government intervention.
It’s in large part because the president brought it up.
Delta Airlines confirmed the players were boarded on a plane Tuesday and headed back to the US after being detained since Nov 7.
There is no word on what kind of punishment the players may receive from the NCAA or UCLA in particular. Some lessons are learned the hard way by some, and this is one of those times.
