Conor McGregor has once again crossed the line in his recent social media war of words with UFC lightweight contender Islam Makhachev.
In the wake of Charles Oliveira's successful title defense against Dustin Poirier at UFC 269, Conor McGregor made his pitch to become the lightweight champion's next opponent, tweeting, “So what date am I fighting Oliveira?”
Unfortunately for McGregor, his UFC lightweight peer Islam Makhachev was in the mood to poke fun at him and replied with “Your fight is on February 30th,” implying that a title fight with Oliveira will never happen.
As expected, “The Notorious,” who has had a lasting on-and-off cage beef with Makhachev's teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov, fired back. In it, McGregor chose to insult Makhachev by calling him as an “inbred,” a dig that refers to the issues about the promotion of inbreeding in Dagestan, Makhachev's home soil.

The said exchange will certainly add to the ongoing rivalry between McGregor and Nurmagomedov's team. Interestingly, Makhachev is among the target opponents of Team McGregor in his return.
“That [lightweight] division is killer,” McGregor's coach John Kavanagh said. “You know, Dan Hooker’s in there. The Islam (Makhachev) fight would be amazing as well, for obvious reasons. And we have, you know, whoever’s going to win this belt (Charles Oliveira or Dustin Poirier). So, you know, look, any of those names. I’m just excited to see Conor back.”
McGregor is currently ranked as the No. 9 UFC lightweight fighter while Makhachev, who has won nine fights in a row, is edging closer to title contention at No. 4.
