An epic UFC trilogy is officially on. Dustin Poirier has signed his fight agreement for a third bout with Conor McGregor on July 10, per ESPN's Ariel Helwani. The Notorious One had already agreed to the fight.
The UFC has been angling for this trilogy ever since Poirier KO'd McGregor in the second round at UFC 257. Now, the two MMA stars will run it back for a third and deciding fight.
McGregor's won the first fight between the two in September 2014, back when both were fighting at featherweight. His win over The Diamond really propelled him to superstardom.
McGregor would continue to ascend the featherweight ranks, defeating the previously undefeated Jose Aldo for the strap. He later became the first two-weight world champion in UFC history by beating lightweight champion at UFC 205. The champ-champ status made McGregor a global icon. He would go on to fight Floyd Mayweather in an exhibition boxing match.
But Poirier's rise back to the top has been every bit as impressive. The loss to McGregor prompted him to move up to lightweight, where he went on a massive win streak that saw him capture the interim lightweight title over Max Holloway at UFC 236. Poirer would lose the unification bout against Khabib Nurmagomedov, but responded with wins over Dan Hooker and a sensational knockout of McGregor.
There was speculation Poirier could once again go after lightweight gold. But he hinted immediately after the win over McGregor he would probably prefer the trilogy fight. It only makes sense, given McGregor is one of the top draws in combat sports.
The location for the fight has yet to be determined, though it is likely to be held in a venue where full fan attendance would be permitted.
