On Thursday, the 122nd U.S. Open began at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. Thus far during the first round, most players are really struggling with the wind and the conditions of the course. Phil Mickelson is no exception. On the par-3 sixth hole, Mickelson hit a fantastic tee shot to about 13 feet from the hole. That’s when it all went wrong.

Mickelson blew his birdie putt a few feet past the hole, setting up a par putt coming back down the hill. However, he missed the par putt from inside four feet and did not even touch the hole. But it somehow got worse. Mickelson, as he’s prone to do, missed a three-foot putt coming back up the hill for bogey. The double bogey dropped him to 5-over for the tournament.

After the massive choke job on the green, fans took to Twitter to roast the controversial golfer.

The six-time Major champion has come under fire recently amid the emergence of the LIV Golf Tour. Mickelson initially made some incendiary comments that sounded like he was excusing the behavior of the Saudi government that all but admitted to murdering and dismembering an American journalist.

He has since distanced himself from those comments, apologizing for them. But just over a week ago, he officially joined the LIV Tour, funded by the Saudi government. Mickelson is one of 17 golfers who were suspended or otherwise barred from competing in PGA Tour events.

However, the U.S. Open is its on body and can choose who they allow into their tournament.

This is not the first time Mickelson found himself in the cross hairs. He was also previously implicated in a three-way insider trading scheme that found the other two men sentences to many years in prison.
