The Birmingham Stallions opened their city to the entire USFL this season. And the host city capped off the first season of the new USFL with a championship title.

They defeated the Philadelphia Stars 33-30 to capture the title. It was a back and forth affair for the most part between the favored Stallions and their underdog adversaries.

The Stallions raced out to a 20-9 lead at halftime, but the Stars continued to fight. Stars quarterback Case Cookus, who left the game with an injury, fired a pass to Jordan Suell to cut the Birmingham lead to five.

Philadelphia took the lead after Cookus found a wide-open Devin Gray early in the fourth quarter. Stallions quarterback Alex McGough found Victor Bolden in the endzone to take the lead for good.

The final blow for the Stars came when backup quarterback KJ Costello threw an interception to Stallions linebacker Scooby Wright III. The Stars scored a touchdown to bring it within three, but threw an interception on their final drive.

“After playing in two failed spring leagues, and getting to play one all the way through, this means a lot,” Wright told Fox Sports following the game.

“There was lot's of uncertainty the last couple years with football and stuff. I'm just grateful this stage was here, and allowed me to play the game I love with the people I love.”

The MVP of the game was Bolden. He caught six passes for 64 yards and brought in the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter. He added 92 yards on four kick returns, as well.
