What's New With Valorant Map Abyss

Valorant added a new map to the game called “Abyss”. The new map is designed to cater to a variety of playstyles, featuring a mix of tight corridors for intense close-quarters combat and expansive open spaces ideal for long-range engagements.

In VALORANT, each map has unique features, or “gimmicks,” adding variety and requiring strategic adaptation. For example, Bind's teleporters connect A Long to B Short and B Long to A Lobby, allowing quick rotations and surprise tactics while creating noise that can be used to fake movements. Lotus features three sites (A, B, and C) and revolving doors that dynamically alter the map layout. This complexity requires teams to cover more ground, adding strategic depth and making rotations more challenging. Fracture includes zip lines for fast movement across the map and unique spawn points, with attackers spawning on either side and defenders in the center. This setup allows multi-directional attacks, quick repositioning, and encourages aggressive flanking plays. These gimmicks enhance strategic depth and make each map distinct and engaging.

Now, Riot Games has given Abyss its own unique feature as well. The interesting feature of this new map Abyss is its lack of boundaries. The upcoming battlefield will resemble Counter Strike's Vertigo map, with no outer walls to prevent players from falling off the edge. Yes, you can now fall off the map if you're not too careful, something that Valorant has never done before. Furthermore, having the risk of falling off the map introduces an additional layer of strategy and risk management. Mobility agents like Raze and Jett gain new ways to utilize their abilities for positioning and surprise attacks, while displacement agents, like Breach and Astra, can exploit this mechanic to secure eliminations using their abilities.

Additionally, jump shortcuts throughout the map allow for faster rotations and potential flanking maneuvers. Although the main goal of planting or defusing the spike at two designated sites stays the same, the level design encourages new strategies for securing these areas. This mechanic encourages more creative plays and adds an extra layer of tactical decision-making, enhancing the overall gameplay experience.

Full Abyss Map Layout

Just like the usual map layout, Abyss will feature two spike sites for players to attack and defend. It also features a central or mid area. Some interesting features include:

  • Death Drops – There are certain areas on the map that have pits or hazards where falling into them results in instant death. Players need to navigate carefully, adding a layer of environmental hazards that can change the dynamics of movement and positioning. This also opens up strategic possibilities for ambushing or controlling these areas.
  • Jump Shortcuts – There are unique jumping paths or platforms that allow players to take shortcuts across the map. These shortcuts can be used for faster rotations, surprising enemies, or evading combat. Mastering these jumps can give players a tactical advantage in terms of mobility and positioning.
  • Branching Mid paths – The mid section of the map offers multiple routes and branching paths. Controlling the mid is crucial as it provides access to both Spike sites and can allow for flanking maneuvers. The branching paths add complexity to mid control, offering various angles and routes for attacks and defenses.

Abyss will also feature some zip lines and vents on the map which makes controlling the map more intense. With that in mind, we can say that Abyss is a challenging map that blends traditional elements like two Spike sites and three lanes with innovative twists such as death drops and jump shortcuts. It demands strategic thinking, precise movement, and adaptability, offering dynamic and engaging gameplay.

Tips for Abyss

Here are some simple tips for you when playing on the Abyss map.

  1. Be creative with abilities – Since the Abyss map has no boundaries, it's important to know which agent has the ability to effectively push or drag enemies off the map. But be mindful not to overdo it, as certain actions could negatively impact not just you but also your teammates.
  2. Make use of the vertical levels – Height control is crucial on this map, with players needing to pay special attention to their positioning. Utilizing elevated positions strategically can provide a tactical advantage. Take time to explore the map independently to discover optimal spots for battle.
  3. Plant spike strategically – planting the spike demands careful planning and defensive measures to prevent surprise attacks from opponents. The map's dynamics might not currently indicate a clear advantage for attackers or defenders, but it's noticeable that some spike planting sites are highly vulnerable and exposed. Therefore, you must prepare thoroughly to avoid getting caught off guard or put in disadvantageous situations during the spike planting phase.
