Everyone can agree that JaVale McGee is the gift that keeps on giving in the NBA. There should also be zero issues raised when one says that Rajon Rondo is the point guard that keeps on dropping dimes. On Thursday night, during the season opener of the Los Angeles Lakers against the Portland Trail Blazers, the two men teamed up to provide an early season highlight play for their fans to enjoy.

That’s a vintage Rajon Rondo play. As one of the most talented court generals of his generation, it was only fitting that it was Rondo who threw that perfectly lobbed assist that sailed over the heads of clueless Blazers defenders to JaVale McGee, whose length and uncanny athleticism for a big man made him a suitable target for the point guard.

That play also encapsulates the best thing McGee could do on offense. McGee can’t be relied upon to do post-up work. He’s not also going to make shots from the perimeter on a consistent basis. The best way to get McGee his buckets is by giving him the ball when he’s positioned at the nearest proximity to the basket, where his size and exceptional bounce make it near impossible for his defenders to stop him.

It’s just the first game of the season for the Lakers, so expect more from this tandem of Rondo and McGee.
