After a hand injury limited him to just five games last season, Golden State Warriors superstar point guard Stephen Curry is looking to lead his team back into contention.

The Warriors are coming off a season where they finished with a 15-50 record—the worst in the league—but it was just four years ago when they made history by compiling a 73-9 record in the regular season, led by a historic NBA MVP season by Curry.

That version of the three-time champion might just show up next season, according to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater.

During that record-setting year, Curry was named as the league’s first ever unanimous MVP after he averaged an NBA-best 30.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 2.1 steals, while shooting an astounding 50.4 percent from the field and 45.4 percent from beyond the arc.

Speaking to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, Curry addressed how he needs to recapture his old form next season, especially given the relatively short training camp.

“I’ve got to be able to create. I’ve got to be in positions where I’m able to score, able to play-make, draw a lot of attention to open up space on the floor, whether that’s pick-and-roll every other possession or whether that’s our motion offense that we usually love to play – whatever combination, it’s gonna be everything on the table. We’ll see what works, what doesn’t, and we’re going to have to adjust on the fly because this training camp situation is different than anybody has ever experienced before.”

Despite losing his backcourt partner in Klay Thompson to a season-ending injury, the two-time MVP still likes the team that they have, which includes All-Star Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins, and new additions in Kelly Oubre Jr. and James Wiseman, the second overall pick of the 2020 NBA Draft.

“You know, we have a pretty talented team. It may look different, but we have a lot of youth, athleticism, length, speed and the ability to do a lot of different things out there.”

If Curry does play like his old self, then he should be one of the contenders for the MVP award, and the Warriors would be right back in the title mix like they have been for must of the last few years.
