Some drama is brewing for the Golden State Warriors ahead of the offseason after Klay Thompson unfollowed the team on social media. Fellow teammate Draymond Green shared his reaction, and it appears the star power forward is laughing the whole situation off.
During a segment on The Draymond Green Show, the Warriors veteran forward called Thompson's situation “comical.” Green went on to explain that it's not something that hurts his feelings. He's not making fun of Thompson but just pointing out that Klay Thompson unfollowing Golden State doesn't bother him.
“I think that's comical. I know you all would be wanting like somebody's feelings to be hurt or something. It ain't that. [It's] never going to be that. That's hilarious.”
Klay Thompson is a free agent this offseason and is seeking a new contract. The Warriors reportedly want to bring Thompson back on a team-friendly deal, according to Ian Casselberry of Yahoo Sports. At the very least, Golden State wants to pay him less annually than his previous contract.
“Klay Thompson is set to be a free agent this offseason. He could still return to the Golden State Warriors, with whom he's played all of his 13 NBA seasons. However, the team wants to bring him back at a lesser number than the $38 million annual salary he averaged with the five-year contract that just expired.”
We'll see how it plays out though, as Thompson unfollowing the Warriors suggests he doesn't agree with the contract the front office may offer him.
We should expect to see Klay Thompson weigh his options in free agency if Golden State can't reach a deal with him before the start of free agency. Thompson finished this season averaging 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.
Warriors' 2024 offseason outlook
This is a pivotal offseason for the Warriors. They've had a long successful run over recent years, winning four rings between 2015 and 2022. But the core of the roster might be aging out of the league at this point, and Golden State must find a way to build around Stephen Curry before it's too late.
That means Klay Thompson's tenure in Golden State is up in the air. He could sign with a new team in free agency, which would leave the Warriors needing a new shooting guard. Now could be a good time to give Jonathan Kuminga a bigger role, as he looked phenomenal last season. If that's the case, the front office could build around Curry, Kuminga and Green.
There are numerous options on the table for this team, though. We should expect the Warriors to be active this offseason whether it's free-agency signings or making trades. Either way, Golden State has a chance to build a deep roster around Stephen Curry and squeeze out whatever juice is remaining in his career.
