The Golden State Warriors parted ways with some serious star power this offseason. Fortunately, they managed to alleviate their losses with the acquisition of former Brooklyn Nets point guard D'Angelo Russell.

There is plenty of speculation regarding the Warriors plans for Russell. The Athletic's Shams Charania said during an appearance on NBA TV that they view him as a long-term option:

“If D’Angelo Russell believed he was gonna leave after a year with the Warriors, he would have never decided to sign that maximum contract with the Warriors,” Charania said. “They have a long-term vision for D’Angelo Russell, they believe he fits great alongside Steph Curry, Klay Thompson.”

This is certainly an intriguing development regarding the Russell trade. While there is no doubt about his potential as an All-Star, many have questioned his fit in the backcourt alongside Steph Curry and Klay Thompson moving forward.

The former No. 2 overall pick had the benefit of serving as the showrunner fora rebuilding Nets squad. He will now likely be tasked with playing second and third fiddle to is new teammates moving forward. It appears the jury is still out on whether or not he will be able to flourish in his role as a complementary option.

Regardless, it appears the Warriors plan to rely heavily on Russell to add a new dynamic to the offense moving forward. He and Curry should have ample time to get assimilated with Thompson expected to be out for 5-7 months while he recovers from a torn ACL.

It will be interesting to see how this experiment plays out and if Russell does indeed wind up in Golden State for the long haul.
