As the Golden State Warriors hope to retain both Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson, they must also grapple with how to handle the other pieces on their roster.

The Warriors are prepared to offer Thompson a max deal of five years and $190, and signing Durant would put them over the luxury tax by an exorbitant amount. Given that they are likely to pay millions in fines anyway, extending a qualifying offer to a depth piece like Quinn Cook seems logical.

Yahoo Sports' Senior NBA Insider, Chris Haynes, reported that the Warriors have in fact extended the qualifying offer to Cook, making him a restricted free agent:

Cook went undrafted out of Duke University, and his future in the NBA was very uncertain after two very short stints in the league with the Mavericks and Pelicans.

But the Warriors signed Cook prior to the 2017-18 season, and he promptly dominated for the Santa Cruz Warriors in the G League. Cook joined the Dubs after a late-season injury to Stephen Curry, starting in 18 of the 33 contests he played in while averaging 9.5 points and shooting close to 45 percent from the three-point line.

It would hardly be a surprise if Cook accepted the qualifying offer, but he might also attract some suitors given his shooting ability and offensive playmaking. Another potential factor is whether or not Kevin Durant remains in Golden State.

Durant and Cook grew up as good friends in AAU ball in the Washington, D.C. area, and Cook's relationship with Durant was one of the reasons that the Warriors signed him in the first place.

With Durant potentially out the door, the Warriors may not match an offer sheet for Cook if they feel that it pushes their financial constraints.
