If anyone knows what it’s like to be stuck in second place, it’s Jerry West. The former Lakers legend made it to the NBA Finals nine times during his terrific playing career, but had the misfortune of losing eight times, most of which came against Bill Russell and his great Boston Celtics.

But West came out on top a lot during his time as a very successful executive, with one of his recent stops coming with the reigning champion Golden State Warriors. And as the new L.A. Clippers advisor told The Athletic Bay Area’s Tim Kawakami, he believes everyone else is basically in a race for second behind the Dubs at the moment.

It’s hard to argue with West’s assessment. While teams like the Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves have upgraded their rosters this offseason, the Warriors still feel as though they’re on a completely different level. Apart from the sheer star power on their roster, their stars complement one another so well, which is what makes them so special.

The Warriors successfully kept that championship team together this offseason, and with Kevin Durant now fully integrated into their system, there’s a chance they can get even better next year. That’s definitely a scary thought for the rest of the league, who likely have to be content with second best behind the Warriors juggernaut for the foreseeable future.
