Almost two years ago, Kevin Durant decided to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder after nine seasons (one season with Seattle SuperSonics) and sign with the Golden State Warriors. However, during his free agency, the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers were also two teams considered in the running.

As Durant looks to help the Warriors win their third championship in four consecutive NBA Finals appearances, he addressed reports of the Celtics being his second choice and the Clippers being his third choice as transcribed by Drew Shiller of NBC Sports (H/T Dan Feldman of Pro Basketball Talk):

“OKC,” Durant said. “It wasn’t Golden State-Boston.”

As all basketball fans remember, the Thunder lost a 3-1 series lead to the Warriors in the 2016 NBA Western Conference Finals. While most thought Durant would re-sign after being close to his second NBA Finals appearance in Oklahoma City, he ultimately joined Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green in Golden State.

For the Celtics and Clippers, they have gone in different directions since Durant's free agency. As the Celtics were able to sign Al Horford and Gordon Hayward in free agency, the Clippers traded Chris Paul to the Houston Rockets and Blake Griffin to the Detroit Pistons after re-signing him.

Heading into the playoffs, the focus for Durant and company is getting relatively healthy. As Thompson and Green are close to returning, it remains to be seen if Curry will be able to return during the first round of the playoffs. If all goes well, there is an opportunity for Durant to face one of the teams that pursued him in free agency.
