The Golden State Warriors have assigned big man Kevon Looney to their G League affiliate Santa Cruz Warriors, a sign that his recovery has picked up onto the latter stages, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic.

Looney was out of action the entire preseason and only played 10 minutes during the season opener against the Los Angeles Clippers after suffering a setback with his neuropathic condition.

The Warriors believe Looney was suffering from nerve-related symptoms after a slew of tests to diagnose his hamstring injury.

“We are hopeful and encouraged that the treatment plan prescribed for him will allow Kevon to return to action in the near future,” the team said in a statement last week.

Golden State has made use of both of their two-way players early on, faced with an infirmary's worth of injuries through the early stretch of the season. Should Looney come back in the next week or so, he would soak up some minutes at center, while giving some occasional relief at the power forward slot.

Rookie Eric Paschall could see his minutes go down slightly due to this, but the Warriors will still try to give him ample playing time so long as he's healthy enough to take the court.

Looney signed a three-year, $15 million free-agent deal with the Warriors this summer, shortly after the team executed a sign-and-trade for D'Angelo Russell.
