Klay Thompson is the first of three Golden State Warriors All-Stars awaiting a new deal in the future, with only one year remaining on his four-year, $69 million deal.

Yet despite the rumors surrounding talks between him and the organization for a possible contract extension, the two sides are likely to pick up the conversation in the summer of 2019, when the salary cap will increase, as will the total he can make through a five-year pact with the team.

His father, Mychal, assured Thompson was committed to remaining with the team but noted this conversation could take another year before showing fruits.

“Klay definitely wants to play his whole career in Golden State and the Bay Area — there’s no question about that,” Mychal explained in an interview with 95.7 The Game, per Drew Shiller of NBC Sports Bay Area. “He loves it up there … loves the fans.”

“But let’s just say that negotiations will probably continue in the summer of ’19.”

Thompson could give up $86 million by signing an extension this offseason, rather than a full-fledged free agent deal in the summer of 2019, and while he's likely to give the team a discount for retaining his services, leaving more than he's made in the last four years of his career would be more than just a charitable help to the franchise.

The front office will have to dig deep into their pockets, likely willing to pay up a massive luxury tax to keep the core of four All-Stars together, still waiting on Draymond Green and Kevin Durant's impending deals.
