Klay Thompson has been open about his willingness to remain in the Bay Area, going back to as far as last year saying just how much fun he's had winning with his teammates. But he could be taking quite a discount to return to Golden State Warriors after a very tight cap situation brewing due to the supermax contracts of his teammates.

Dan Feldman of NBC Sports Bay Area explained that the shooting guard could perhaps be making the biggest sacrifice of the four All-Stars, leaving up to $86 million on the table to return to the team once he re-signs as a free agent.

“That Thompson wants to stay with Golden State isn’t groundbreaking. He has said so numerous times, even noting he might take a discount. But an extension would mean a MASSIVE discount. His max on an extension will be $102,083,386 over five years (eligible starting July 1). If he lets his current contract expire then re-signs in 2019 free agency, his max projects to be about $188 million over five years.”

Salaries have skyrocketed, and Thompson's potential 2019 contract falls only $13 million short of the supermax that his backcourt mate Stephen Curry signed in 2017.

It's still unlikely that Thompson and the Warriors will agree on a deal this offseason, making it a more likely probability that the two sides delay this until 2019 and figure out a compensation that makes sense for both sides.

Regardless of the number, the Warriors will have to dig into the luxury tax if they hope to keep the core of four All-Stars together for the long run.
