Saying that Omari Spellman was shocked to learn that he was traded from the Atlanta Hawks to the Golden State Warriors would be an understatement.

The Warriors traded for Spellman this offseason, sending Damian Jones and a second-round pick to the Hawks in the process.

While Spellman is excited to join the Warriors — a team that managed to make it to the Finals in the past five seasons — he admitted he was hurt to learn the news of the trade. In fact, he revealed he cried straight off in what was a “very emotional” moment for him.

Spellman played in 46 games for the Hawks in his rookie season, averaging 5.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game while shooting 40.2 percent from the field, 34.4 percent from 3-point territory and 71.1 percent from the free-throw line.

Although Spellman showed flashes of brilliance, his time on the court was dwarfed by the exploits of All-Rookie team members Kevin Huerter and Trae Young. Not to mention that John Collins took the spotlight in the frontcourt.

Furthermore, Spellman struggled to maintain his weight during his first season in the league and ended up ballooning to 315 pounds during the Hawks’ Summer League games earlier this year.

Spellman has since lost weight and will likely play fairly big minutes for the Warriors early in the season, especially with Willie Cauley-Stein out with an injury to start the year.
