Golden State Warriors big man James Wiseman took a major step in his rehab on Tuesday by participating in his first 5-on-5 scrimmage since his knee injury. Dubs coach Steve Kerr provided a key update on Wiseman's status after Tuesday's practice session and it's safe to say that the 56-year-old is delighted with Wiseman's recent progress.

According to Kerr, Wiseman's knee responded well to his first scrimmage session in nearly a year:

“He played 5-on-5 for the first time today,” Kerr said on 95.7 The Game’s Damon & Ratto (h/t Kristi Rodriguez of NBC Sports). “Kind of a mix of half-court and full-court. He looked good. I saw him afterward and he said he felt great. The knee is doing really well. Those are all really positive signs.”

At this point, however, coach Kerr still isn't ready to provide a timetable for Wiseman's return. However, the Warriors coach did hint at a possible comeback for Wiseman at some point this season:

“With that said, we don't know what it means long term,” Kerr continued. “It just means he will continue to ramp up his work and hopefully continue to progress where he gets to the point where he'll be able to play this year. We don't have a timetable and we don't really know what's next beyond tomorrow. We're just taking it a day at a time.”

To say that Wiseman's recovery has been slow would be an understatement. Next month, it's going to be one full calendar year since the highly-touted big man last suited up for the Dubs. The 20-year-old went under the knife in April 2021 to repair a torn meniscus on his right knee. He reportedly underwent a second surgery in December.

Be that as it may, there's no denying that Kerr's update here is extremely positive, especially considering all the setbacks this young man has had to endure. We still don't know when he's going to take the floor again for the Warriors. We are not even sure if he's actually going to be able to help his squad this term. However, all things considered, it's just great to hear that Wiseman is moving in the right direction here.
