The modern style of play in the NBA has leaned towards being position-less which means teams may field in multiple players playing the same natural spots and more small-ball lineups. It has resulted in having less need for traditional centers, putting the job security of the likes of Golden State Warriors big man Zaza Pachulia in danger.

The Georgian international has been linked to a trade to the Milwaukee Bucks as the Dubs may opt to have only one legitimate center on their roster. Pachulia said he thinks the trend in the league is unfortunate but he remains optimistic he could receive more playing time in the future as NBA seasons are very long, according to Connor Letourneau of the SF Gate.

“That’s the situation, unfortunately,” said Pachulia. “You have to stay with it because it’s a long season. Injuries are a part of the game. Things might change.”

Big men in the league today have different skill sets from previous decades. Now, they shoot more 3-pointers and have the ability to score in many ways and not just limited to baskets inside the paint. Most young power forwards and centers of today can also create their own shots off-the-dribble just like how guards do it.

Pachulia and the rare breed of centers like him may be forced to add new moves to their skill sets which may be hard to do especially for veterans. However, it can also be seen as a challenge which promotes players to become open to change and ultimately make the competition in the NBA even better in the future.
