Dwayne Haskins will be back under center for the Washington Football Team this weekend.

Washington officially announced Friday that Alex Smith is out with a calf injury, clearing the way for Haskins to start Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.

This is quite the time for Haskins to get the call.

Washington holds a narrow advantage in the NFC East, with a one-game lead over the New York Giants and a 1.5-game lead over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Football Team has the head-to-head advantage over the Eagles, but Washington was swept in both regular-season matchups against the Giants.

Haskins, meanwhile, has not started since a Week 4 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He ended up playing nearly half of the team's offensive snaps against the San Francisco 49ers this past weekend when Smith went down, but had just 12 pass attempts.

Washington's quarterback situation had been fluid early in the year. Haskins was named the starter out of camp, but the former first-round pick soon gave way to Kyle Allen.

But Allen's injuries then gave way to Smith, who has made a miraculous comeback from a life-threatening  injury in November 2018.

Smith has gone 4-1 as the team's starter, leading Washington to the top of the NFC East. But he exited the 49ers game just before halftime and did not return due to the calf injury. It was thought Smith might progress enough to have a chance to start this weekend, but the calf still appears to be giving him problems.

As such, the Washington Football Team will now turn to Haskins. The young quarterback has thrown for 990 yards this season while completing 60.8% of his passes. He has four passing touchdowns and one rushing score.
